Functioning of the tuning

The chip-tuning works via software optimisation of the engine control unit. Different parameters such as quantity of fuel, moment of ignition, charge air pressure, etc. are affected.

There are two tuning options available: :

  • chip installation (auxiliary module)
  • software optimisation of the engine control unit

Both options are based on the same principle. The control parameters setting the moment of ignition, air supply, fuel supply, etc. are being optimised within the tolerances which are set up by the manufacturer according to the local conditions.

Vehicles are globally designed guaranteeing their functioning in the heat of the desert as well as in the coldness of Siberia.

How does the engine control unit work?

The engine control unit consists of one or several small high performance micro computers defining and setting up the values of the different regulation requirements. The micro computer executes a programme which is firmly installed in the memory. (Eprom or chip only).

The main job for example as far as gasoline engines are concerned is defining and setting the required and maximum injected fuel quantity. The injected fuel quantity depends on air intake, the relation of air and fuel must be correct to allow the perfect functioning of the catalytic converter. The moment of ignition of the compressed mixture must be correctly determined, late ignition and the consumption will increase, premature ignition and the motor starts knocking.

The motor management fulfils other functions too, e.g. the automatic soft switch-off of the fuel injection system at maximum engine speed, on reaching the speed limit. A cruise control unit controlled by the motor management can also be integrated. Frequently the fan after-run and the cold running period are controlled by using numerous different measured values such as temperature of cooling water, fuel, oil and the outside temperature.

As for modern Diesel engines, the injected fuel quantity is determined by using the in-take air mass, air pressure, outside temperature, engine speed and load, which is necessary in order to fulfil future exhaust emissions standards. Furthermore, as far as turbocharged vehicles are concerned, the charge air pressure of the exhaust gas turbocharger must be defined and adjusted subject to load and torque. The required data for the control are also recorded in Eprom. With this three-dimensional filed data the engine control unit calculates the required injected fuel quantity which is necessary or possible at a certain load/engine speed.
